This week, I'm opening a pack of 1990-91 Bowman cards. It's funny how these packages practically fall open, but the gum sticks to the cards so well.
Without any more delay...Let's get to the cards!

1) Michel Petit - Quebec Nordiques - Nothing too remarkable about the defensman for the now-defunct team. Seven points in seven games against the Sabres in 89-90 is pretty impressive, though.
2) Ed Belfour - Chicago Blackhawks - Essentially, this is a rookie card. The back of the card, rather than having his stats against opposing teams, simply has a message: "Ed appeared in 9 games in the 1990 playoffs, going 4-2 with a 2.49 goals against average." Nice.
3) Gary Roberts - Calgary Flames - He even looked intense back in 1990. Looks like the last team that wanted to play him in 1989-90 was the Nordiques. 8 points in 3 games. Sick.
4) Larry Murphy - Minnesota North Stars - No explanation need for this one. in 6 games against the Penguins and Islanders (3 each), Murphy had 15 points (1989-90). If you didn't know why the Penguins traded for him back in the day, maybe you do now?
5) Tony Hrkac - Quebec Nordiques - I didn't know this, but it looks like Tony Hrkac went to college with Eddie Belfour. I always knew Hrkac as one of the original members of the Atlanta Thrashers.
6) Kirk McLean - Vancouver Canucks - Kirk McLean playing for the only team I choose to remember him playing for. Notice the old Canucks logo, and a reference to the old jerseys on his helmet.
7) Mike Vernon - Calgary Flames - Mike Vernon will always be a Red Wing in my memory. Interesting that he looks to be using Koho equipment exclusively. I wonder if he got paid for that. Also, what a wicked mullet (I think)
8) Tomas Sandstrom - Hat Tricks Card - Apparently, April 10, 1990 was a good day to be a King. Two weeks after finding Dave Taylor notched his hat trick on that date, it looks like Tomas Sandstrom did the same!
9) Bob Sweeney - Boston Bruins - One of the better US-Born players at the time. Sweeney had 125 points in 239 games to this point in his career. Not bad for a 6th round pick.
10) Brendan Shanahan - New Jersey Devils - Shanny playing for the team that drafted him 2nd overall in 1987. Looks like he averaged about one point per game in 1989-90, and kept that pace per team. He already had 206 games by this point.
11) Jim Sandlak - Vancouver Canucks - 1) What the hell is he doing with his hands? 2) Who the hell is "BABE"? 3) I never realized the old Canucks logo was just an ice skate moving very fast.
12) Bob Essensa - Winnipeg Jets - Talk about a goalie goldmine. This is, what, the fourth in this pack? Went to college at Michigan State. And was a fourth round pick in 1983.
13) Mark Janssens - New York Rangers - Not a very remarkable player. He looks young because he is. Probably only 21 in this picture.
14) Geoff Courtnall - Washington Capitals - 12 Points in 7 games against the Penguins, 10 Points in 7 games against the Flyers in 1989-90. Not as young as he looks. He's probably 28 in this picture.
15) Daniel Shank - Holy Mole. But seriously...a sophmore card, and signed as a free agent to the NHL. Interesting note, via the Hockey Database, he only played 77 NHL games, but appears to have been a dominant force in roller hockey in the mid 90's.
Thanks for visiting, see you next week for another pack of cards!
