Friday Pack of Cards

It's Friday, and that means it's time for another Pack of Cards

This week, I've got a pack of 1990-91 Upper Deck cards for you. And we finally get some Penguins in it, in a big way.

(click for a bigger view)

1) Bernie Nicholls - New York Rangers - Over a point-per-game player, I like how the picture almost looks like a painting because of the 3-tone quality of his face (red nose, highlight, lowlight)

2) Rich Sutter - St. Louis Blues - One of the infamous Sutter brothers, he was apparently traded to St. Louis during the 1989-90 season. Any thoughts about the patch on his sleeve?

3) Tony McKegney - Quebec Nordiques - He looks like a comedian with that smile and stubble combination. Played for 5 teams in 4 seasons from 1986-87 to 1989-90. Oh, and he was -31 with Quebec in 1989-90.

4) Peter Sidorkiewicz - Hartford Whalers - I always knew of this guy as the backup goalie for Hartford in NHL '94. A native of Poland, he apparently made the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1988-89.

5) Checklist 301-350 - The other side is the checklist for 351-400

6) Dave Chyzowski - New York Islanders - Apparently the 2nd overall pick in the 1989 draft. Interestingly the career stats has totals for the Islanders, their minor-league affiliate (Springfield), and his junior team (Kamloops).

7) Craig Fisher - Philadelphia Flyers, Star Rookie - A quick look to the Hockey Database reveals that Fisher, who performed well in College, only played a total of 12 NHL games. Worth noting, he was a 3rd round pick, which was at the time good for 56th overall, equivalent to a late 2nd rounder by today's standards.

8) Gary Leeman - Toronto Maple Leafs - Very unremarkable player. 300+ points and 300+ PIMs in a little over 450 games.

9) Mario Lemieux - Pittsburgh Penguins - What a picture. What a player. 838 points in 427 games to this point. Almost a two-point-per-game pace.

10) Jeff Jackson - Quebec Nordiques - Probably a fourth liner, third at best. He looks like an actor, but I can't remember who the actor I'm thinking of is.

11) John Druce - Washington Capitals - I can't help but wonder what he's looking at. Anyway, a 40th overall pick in 1985, he carried the Caps in the 1990 playoffs, with 14 goals (and one overtime GWG) in 15 games. At least that's what the card tells me.

12) Phil Bourque - Pittsburgh Penguins - Ah, the old 2-9er. Pretty bad on the +/- front, but 104 points in 208 games isn't bad, even if there were probably a bunch of those that Mario was involved in.

Thanks for stopping by, have a great weekend, and we'll see you next week as we take a break from the 90s.
