Yzerman named new Lightning GM

As I said on my Facebook page when I saw it yesterday, recent HOF inductee Steve Yzerman was named the new General Manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He brings plenty of Team Canada recruiting experience, and enters a situation where the team is under performing and burdened with bad contracts

But it's not all bad news! Stevie Y worked for the Red Wings after he retired! So, he should be able to make the Lightning good soon enough, right?

Maybe.

It'll depend on how big his balls are. If he's willing to firesale some of the worse contracts on the team to the teams with cap space to take them (that's pronounced Atlanta), he could succeed.

Really, all it would take to push the team past mediocrity is a starting goaltender and maybe someone on the team who can act as a playmaker.

Still, even with all the potential of having Steve Stamkos and Vinny Lecavalier and Martin ShortSt. Louis, the biggest problem might be overcoming the fact that THEY PLAY HOCKEY IN FLORIDA

So good luck to Mr. Yzerman, you're gonna need to be stone cold to keep that ice from melting.
