Friday Pack of Cards

Time for another Friday Pack O' Cards!

A quick note: I got a scan this week, and added a scan to the last post of the cards. Should keep with that for the future as well.

This week, I'm opening a pack of 1990-91 Upper Deck cards. I have a lot of loyalties to Upper Deck, in 1993-94 they were the staple of my fanatical collection of cards.

Anyway, enough memory lane. Let's get to the cards!

(click for a bigger view)

1) Pat Elynuik - Winnipeg Jets - Haha. He looks really constipated. He apparently was selected 7th overall in 1986. Older Jets logo, to boot. Neat.

2) Mike Krushelnyski - Los Angeles Kings - Nothing too remarkable here. The pictures are such better quality for Upper Deck. Interesting note: The puck has the old orange NHL logo on it you can see.

3) Todd Elik - Los Angeles Kings - This may be the first instance of a goatee in hockey. Seriously, I think it might be. Apparently he was a free agent to the NHL, and was traded from the Rangers to the Kings in 1988.

4) Jason Miller - New Jersey Devil, Star Rookie - You're not the only one who doesn't know who the hell this is. Despite being drafted 18th overall in 1989, he played just 6 games in his NHL career. With no points and no PIMs. Total Bust.

5) Mick Vukota - New York Islanders - Was actually signed as a free agent to the NHL, and averaged around 6 PIMs per games through 3 NHL seasons.

6) Mathieu Schneider - Montreal Canadiens - Interestingly, the card says he was born in New York City. He's real young here, only about 20 for the picture. Neat how he had come full circle...until this season.

7) Stewart Gavin - Minnesota North Stars - Another role player. The 5 seasons listed on the card include three with the Whalers and two with the North Stars. He kills teams...?

8) Geoff Courtnall - Washington Capitals - Look at that gash above his eye! I did a double take on that one! He was pretty well traveled at this point, having played for three teams in four seasons. Also, I can't lie, that old jersey gives me some serious nostalgia.

9) Gary Nylund - New York Islanders - Heineken logo in the background...And look at that blurry bling above his back! Anyway, he was a physical defensman who managed a penalty per game to that point.

10) Alexi Kasatonov - New Jersey Devils - So THAT'S where Miro Satan got the idea for that look! He was born in "Leningrad, Soviet Union", and was a Soviet National League All-Star for 9 straight seasons! P.s.: Gotta love the red and green jerseys!

11) Jan Erixon - New York Rangers - Really, there's only one thing notable about this card. It's the first card I've consciously seen that lists the players position as only "Wing"...I guess he works for Mercury?

12) Luke Richardson - Toronto Maple Leafs - He was drafted 7th overall in '87, and according to the card "has established himself as one of the NHL's hardest bodycheckers". That face would make a good Halloween mask, at least.

Only 12 cards to a pack of Upper Deck cards. Be sure to check back next friday for another pack of Bowman cards!
