1) Peter Lappin - Minnesota North Stars (Star Rookie) - Seriously, what did it take at that point to get a Star Rookie card? Lappin had played 6 games, none in the playoffs with Minnesota at this point, managing only two penatly minutes...incidentally, those 6 games were just 1 fewer than his career total.
2) Brent Hughes - Winnipeg Jets - Just 39 games to this point. His rockin' stashe hides his age really well. Also, you can just barely make out what I would say is Glen Healy in the background
3) Dave Andreychuk - Buffalo Sabres - NOW we're talking! Andreychuck was already a legend in his own right at this point, having had his second best season in his career to this point last season, potting 82 points in 73 games in 1989-90
4) Sergei Makarov - Calgary Flames (All Rookie Team) - Ah Sergei Makarov. Great story about him: he came over to the NHL for the 1989-90 season, after playing for the Central Red Army for 11 seasons. This made him a 31 year old rookie. With 86 points in 80 games his 'Rookie' Season, he was the runaway winner of the Calder Trophy. And the age restriction was put on the award right after he won it.
5) Randy Velischek - New Jersey Devils - Clearly his style was influenced by Wayne Gretzky. That said, it's really too bad that he couldn't get a little less effeminate a look for this card.
6) Dino Ciccarelli - Washington Capitals - Other than bringing images of Billy Guerin to my head, Ciccarelli was a player who, despite lack of success in the playoffs, managed some impressive career numbers: 1200 points in 1232 games in his career. Who says he shouldn't be in the HoF?
7) Steve Smith - Chicago Blackhawks - Smith made a name on my childhood as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, a trade which happened the season after this card. I also just noticed something FASCINATING about him: Birthplace: Glasgow Scotland! Woo!!
8) Scott Stevens - Washington Capitals - Yeah, this is a repeat, but I don't feel like coming up with original text. Check last week, #9
9) Brian Trottier - New York Islanders - Oh Bryan Trottier. Very much like a Bill Guerin to the early 90's Penguins: Wiley Veteran reinvigorated by young star wins Stanley Cup. Here's hoping the Pens can repeat the success they had with Trottier
10) Joe Nieuwendyk - Calgary Flames - Aside from having one of the top 10 hardest North American names to spell (for those who are unfamiliar, his last name is pronounced: New En Dike), Nieuwendyk was one another legend of the NHL. Just look at that intense look on his face!
11) Dave Reid - Toronto Maple Leafs - Reid had some amazing staying power, lasting all the way into the new millenuim after being drafted in 1982.
12) Glenn Andersen - Edmonton Oilers - Later of the New York Rangers, Andersen was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, though there was some controversy over whether or not he really earned it. Admittedly, his stache almost earns it on it's own.
Well, that wraps up another edition of Friday Pack of Cards...Be sure to make your way back next week for a little suprise! See you then!
